Why Specialty Classes Are A Game-Changer for Your Gym

In the competitive landscape of group fitness gyms, owners & coaches must continually innovate to keep members engaged and progressing. While daily programming, like traditional CrossFit Classes with variations of strength, skill, and met-con, provides a solid foundation, incorporating specialty classes as supplementary offerings can significantly elevate your gym’s appeal and attendance. Creating unique programs that span from 4-8 weeks allows for better skill development and variety that your standard classes can’t always deliver. Below, we’ll delve into the key benefits of adding specialty classes, including improved retention, enhanced coaching opportunities, equipment utilization, deeper member connections, and adaptable training styles. Plus, we provide some free resources to implement them seamlessly into your gym setting.

See what some of our affiliate coaches & members have to say about incorporating them into the gym’s structure.

“Specialty classes have been great for members who seek specific improvement. In a traditional 1 hour period we, as coaches, may not always have the time and bandwidth to break down each movement and technique like TTB, butterfly PUs, and sandbag cleans. But since we have began offering speciality classes there is a need and a want for members to learn, it’s been great for members who want to take their skills to the next level.”
– Lauren, TTT Coach

“Specialty classes have been a huge hit for us! They’ve given our coaches more time to teach, connect, and focus on what members truly want and need. With 15–25 athletes showing up weekly for HYROX, strongman, and gymnastics skills, these sessions have become a hit for anyone looking to level up their training and they’ve turned into an incredible community builder too!”
-Travis, TTT Coach

The general classes are great for the everyday grind, working out and being social.  However, it can be tough to progress in specific movements in that setting.  The specialty classes offer that opportunity to learn the things that require more individual attention.  The ERG classes taught me how to be more efficient on the machines, particularly Becky’s rowing class.  The strong man sessions let me play with the bulkier items that are tough to integrate into general classes like yoke carries and sandbag cleans.  If there’s something you want to learn but don’t want to go into individual lessons, the specialties are a fun way to do that!”

1. Boost Member Engagement and Combat Workout Boredom

You’d think people wouldn’t get bored because of the constantly varied nature of CrossFit workouts, but people do get bored. The daily grind of your class offerings can sometimes lead to burnout. Specialty classes reintroduce excitement through targeted themes like Hyrox Prep, Olympic Lifting, gymnastics cycles, strongman Saturdays, or even something as simple as a run or bodybuilding club. This variety prevents monotony, motivating members to attend more frequently and explore new challenges. Additionally, these classes provide an opportunity to use a wide variety of equipment and odd objects, such as sandbags, yokes, ergs, or ropes, that might be underutilized or challenging to incorporate in your daily classes. By rotating in these implements, you create fresh, dynamic experiences that keep members hooked and buzzing about what your gym offers. You also get athletes moving in more movement patterns than the typical sagittal plane exercises of CrossFit.

2. Cater to Diverse Fitness Goals and Skill Levels

Members come to CrossFit classes for a variety of goals, including body composition, community, or to get stronger.  It is very challenging to address all of these with one program directly. Specialty classes address these by offering specialized progressions that align with individual needs, making your gym more inclusive while remaining affordable. What you can charge for a small group is likely a more affordable rate than personal training. They also provide a chance to offer a more individualized style of training outside of the traditional class model. By providing a progressive skill-building series or low-impact options, you can ensure members will remain a part of your facility through changing seasons of their fitness journey, whether recovering from injury, preparing for competitions, or adapting to life changes. This adaptability helps everyone progress safely, effectively, and keeps interest high.

3. Drive Revenue Growth Without Overhauling Your Core Programming

Specialty classes serve as premium add-ons, creating new revenue streams through tiered pricing or packages. They give coaches more time to instruct advanced skills that are difficult to cover with great frequency in a standard 60-minute class, such as intricate Olympic lifts or technique refinements. This elevated instruction quality not only justifies higher fees but also attracts skilled trainers to your team, boosting overall gym prestige and drawing in new clientele. Don’t be afraid to charge for these upgraded offerings. Your high-class coaching and instruction is worth it.

4. Improve Member Retention and Loyalty

One of the most critical benefits is enhanced member retention. Specialty classes combat dropout by providing structured progressions that deliver visible results, addressing common issues like plateaus or lack of motivation. Members invested in a multi-week program are more likely to stick around, renew memberships, and even upgrade to premium services. Experimental insights show that diverse class offerings lead to longer membership periods, as they create ongoing value and a habit-forming routine that keeps people committed.

5. Differentiate Your Gym in a Competitive Market

Stand out by offering niche expertise that other gyms can’t match, such as endurance challenges or youth development programs. This positions your facility as a comprehensive fitness hub, appealing to specialized markets and generating referrals. However, it’s crucial to remember that these should remain a small part of your overall offerings to avoid shifting your gym’s core culture. Keep the primary focus on your main product, your daily class programming, while using specialty classes as supplemental tools to attract new members through the door and keep current ones engaged, progressing, and loyal over the long term. By adding them thoughtfully, you’ll elevate member experiences without diluting what makes your gym unique.
